L’Énigme Velázquez (2025)

Édouard Manet praised Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) as the "painter of painters," Salvador Dalí called him the "glory of Spain," and Pablo Picasso dedicated an entire series of paintings to him. Velázquez, the court painter to the Spanish king, created with "Las Meninas" one of the most influential paintings and painted portraits of the royal family, the pope, as well as ordinary people. His life's work comprises over 200 paintings. Despite his prominence, much about Velázquez remains obscure. Where did his mastery of light and shadow, which gives his Baroque portraits subtle tones and a vivid atmosphere, come from, and how did he achieve this unparalleled realism?
